Wanting to travel more with your family but struggling with the high cost? Looking for more ways to save big?! Well, look no further as I have more tips to allow you to fly your family on points!

Do you have kids? A husband or wife? Any family who you travel with and are financially responsible for? Then this first tip is for you! Did you know that you can sign children up to airline loyalty programs once they turn 2? That’s right, as soon as you have to start paying for them to occupy a seat on the plane, they are also eligible for the same airline program benefits. Amazing right? So ensure they are signed up to the same airline loyalty program/s as yourself and input their membership numbers on all flights taken as you would yourself. Once they have earned points, then comes a little hack called ‘family pooling.’ This means you can transfer their points to your own account, boosting your balance and allowing you to fly the family on points faster! Each program has its own rules around this, some only allow a set amount of people per pool, others are unlimited. Please check the individual terms for your own circumstance. Side note-another little benefit of signing your kids up for airline loyalty programs is that often they will come with their own kids perks such as little activity packs when flying. Cute!

Another tip for if you are booking flights (and linking to your airline loyalty account) is to try and do this when the program is offering deals. Quite often they will have ‘sales’ offering double points or status credits etc. This is a good way to maximise points when paying for flights. If you are someone who travels often, or perhaps for work, status credits are a great way to reap rewards such as flying business class.

This is also applicable for the Flybuys/Everyday Rewards programs when converting these points to either Qantas or Velocity points. They often offer bonus points deals which need to be activated before use but then can easily be stacked for greater airline loyalty points. If you have the extra money to spend, try to buy more essential grocery and household items during these periods. It allows you to bulk buy items which you know you will always use without spending more money overall. A great deal I have seen lately includes a gift card offer through Coles which is a fabulous way to earn extra points. The gift card works as a debit card so it’s money you would spend anyway but with a points incentive. Be sure to always check the supermarket catalogues for these!

Do you put fuel in your car? Are you using BP and scanning your Qantas card? Are you using 7/11 and scanning your Velocity card? This is another everyday way to earn more points.  Caltex are also linked to Everyday Rewards and Shell to Flybuys. If you’re not doing this already, you absolutely need to be!

Did you also know that you can earn loyalty points through affiliate airlines too? So even if you book with an airline in which you are not a loyalty member of, check which airlines they are affiliated with. This means for example, when booking Malaysia Airlines flights, you can input your Qantas Frequent Flyer number and still earn points towards your preferred program from flying with other carriers. Incredible!

And finally, always be vigilant in knowing what extra deals are currently on offer and how you can make these work for you. We were recently able to score 10000 Velocity points as a family through a DoorDash incentive in which you linked your Velocity membership with a DoorDash membership and placed an eligible order. We signed the 5 of us (those of us who have Velocity memberships) up to DoorDash and placed 5 seperate orders and then automatically the points pooled over to the one membership! Pay attention to your membership emails to stay up to date with current offers and remember to use the kids as extra accounts when possible in order to maximise benefits.
